10 Tips for Making the Most of Your National Park Adventure
From sunrise hikes to collecting memories — here's everything you need to know before your next park visit.
There's something magical about standing at the edge of the Grand Canyon, breathing in the pine-scented air of Yosemite, or watching a geyser erupt at Yellowstone. America's national parks are unlike anything else on earth — wild, humbling, and absolutely unforgettable. Whether you're a seasoned park hopper or planning your very first adventure, here are our favorite tips for making every park visit truly count.
Go Early — Always
Seriously. The crowds, the parking, the golden light for photos — everything is better before 8am. Sunrise at a national park is one of life's greatest gifts. Set that alarm and thank yourself later!
Download the NPS App Before You Go
The National Park Service app is free and works offline. Trail maps, ranger programs, wildlife alerts — everything you need in one place. Download it before you lose cell service at the park entrance!
Get the America the Beautiful Pass
At $80 for a full year of unlimited park access, the America the Beautiful Annual Pass pays for itself after just 2-3 visits. If you're serious about exploring our national parks — this is an absolute no-brainer!
Talk to a Ranger
Rangers are the most underrated resource at any park. They know the hidden trails, the best wildlife viewing spots and the local secrets that no guidebook covers. Always stop at the visitor center first — you'll never regret it!
Pack More Water Than You Think You Need
Then pack more. Seriously. Dehydration sneaks up on you at elevation and in desert parks. A good rule of thumb: one liter of water per hour of hiking per person. Your future self will be very grateful!
Leave No Trace
Pack out everything you pack in. Stay on marked trails. Don't feed the wildlife — no matter how cute they are! These incredible places belong to all of us and to every generation that comes after us. Treat them with the love they deserve.
Visit During Shoulder Season
June through August is peak season at most parks — meaning packed trails and overflowing parking lots. September and October offer stunning fall colors, cooler temperatures and dramatically smaller crowds. Plan accordingly and you'll have a completely different experience!
Stay Inside the Park if You Can
Lodges, cabins and campgrounds inside the parks book up months in advance — but the experience is worth every bit of planning. Waking up inside the park before the day visitors arrive is something you will never ever forget.
Always Bring a Paper Map
Cell service is unreliable in most parks and GPS can fail at the worst moments. Download offline maps AND grab a paper map at the entrance gate. Old school — but it could absolutely save your hike!
Collect the Memory 🏔️
Every park visit deserves to be remembered. Whether it's a photo, a journal entry or one of our handcrafted National Park Adventure Charms — find a meaningful way to carry that memory with you long after you've left the trailhead.
